Gloucester Secure Springbok Powerhouse Jean Kleyn in Major Premiership Coup

English Premiership side Gloucester Rugby has sent a clear message to their rivals by announcing the blockbuster signing of Rugby World Cup winner Jean Kleyn. The veteran South African lock will join the “Cherry and Whites” for the 2026/27 season, ending a storied decade-long tenure with the Irish province Munster.

Currently languishing in 9th place in the 10-team Premiership, Gloucester is banking on Kleyn’s championship pedigree to spark a much-needed revival.

A Profile of Power: The Dual-International Giant

At 32, Jean Kleyn brings a unique wealth of experience to the Kingsholm Stadium. He holds the rare distinction of having represented two different nations on rugby’s grandest stage:

  • Ireland (2019): Kleyn earned five caps for Ireland, including two appearances at the 2019 World Cup, after qualifying via residency during his time at Munster.
  • South Africa (2023): Benefiting from updated eligibility rules, Kleyn debuted for the Springboks in 2023 and played a pivotal role off the bench in their historic World Cup Final victory over the All Blacks.
  • Club Success: He was a cornerstone of the Munster side that secured the 2022/23 United Rugby Championship (URC) title.

Skivington’s Rebuilding Strategy

Gloucester Director of Rugby George Skivington hasn’t hidden his admiration for the 6ft 8in lock. “Jean is a player I’ve admired for a long time,” Skivington noted. “He brings real edge, experience, and a winning mentality, which will be invaluable for our group.”

Kleyn is the fourth major piece of Gloucester’s puzzle for next season. He joins an impressive recruitment list that includes:

  1. Jac Morgan (Wales)
  2. Dewi Lake (Wales)
  3. Dan Robson (Scrumhalf)

Kleyn: “Thrilled” for the Next Chapter

Reflecting on his move, Kleyn expressed his excitement about joining a club with such a deep-rooted rugby culture. “It’s a club with incredible history and a passionate fan-base,” he said. “The vision shared with me really matched what I was looking for in the next chapter of my career.”
