The revolving door at Durban City FC has swung again, and this time, it has taken the “architect” of their technical structure with it. Veteran German tactician Ernst Middendorp has officially resigned from his post as Technical Director, sending shockwaves through the Betway Premiership.
Middendorp’s departure, confirmed today, Friday, 27 February 2026, marks the end of a turbulent second stint that lasted just over two months.
Inside the Shock Decision
The move comes at a time of massive off-field upheaval for the Citizens. Despite the team sitting comfortably in 6th place on the log, the boardroom and technical bench have been a whirlwind of activity.
- The Breaking Point: Reports suggest that the relationship between Middendorp and the club’s management, led by Chairman Farook Kadodia, became untenable following the recent axing of head coach Sinethemba Badela after only three games.
- The “Power Struggle”: While Middendorp recently took to LinkedIn to deny that he was “scheming” for the head coaching role, sources indicate that a “clash of ideologies” regarding recruitment and the future direction of the squad made his position impossible.
- A History of “In-and-Out”: This was Middendorp’s second exit from the club this season alone. He initially left in September 2025 following a fallout with then-coach Gavin Hunt, only to be reappointed in December 2025 to “stabilize” the ship.

What This Means for Durban City
With Middendorp gone, the club is now without its primary technical strategist. Interim coach Pitso Dladla remains at the helm, but the vacuum left by Middendorp’s experience—spanning decades and multiple continents—leaves a massive hole in the club’s long-term planning.
“I have no interest in, nor have I pursued, the position of Head Coach… I have fully supported the mandate as Technical Director.” — Ernst Middendorp (via his final LinkedIn statement)
