As Bafana Bafana gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico, head coach Hugo Broos has pulled back the curtain on the staggering financial demands of global football giants.
Revealing the logistical hurdles behind securing high-profile friendlies, Broos confirmed that the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF) offered to bring the five-time world champions to South Africa—for a hefty price tag of $5 million (approx. R84 million).
The Price of Prestige: Brazil vs. Argentina
The Brazilians weren’t the only heavyweights interested in a Johannesburg showdown. According to Broos and SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao, world champions Argentina also proposed a friendly a few months ago, requesting an even steeper €5 million (approx. R98 million).
Faced with these multi-million rand demands, SAFA opted for a more strategic and fiscally responsible path by securing two matches against Panama.
“The best scenario would be to play an Asian team, a middle America team, and a European team,” Broos explained, noting that even the Panama fixtures required a significant financial investment.
