The rivalry between the Springboks and the All Blacks is entering a high-stakes new chapter. Following the mid-contract dismissal of Scott Robertson amid rumors of a player revolt, new New Zealand head coach Dave Rennie has officially unveiled the backroom team tasked with reclaiming global dominance ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Rennie’s selection blends familiar continuity with loyal lieutenants from his successful stints at the Chiefs, Glasgow Warriors, and Kobe Steelers.

The New All Blacks Brain Trust
The 62-year-old former Wallabies coach has surrounded himself with a mix of tactical innovators and New Zealand rugby icons:
- Defence Coach – Tana Umaga: The legendary former All Blacks captain moves from Moana Pasifika to bring “mana” and defensive grit to the national setup.
- Attack Coach – Mike Blair: The former Scotland captain and British & Irish Lion, a long-time Rennie collaborator, is charged with sparking an innovative New Zealand offensive.
- Forwards Coach – Jason Ryan: The sole survivor from the Robertson/Foster eras remains to provide essential continuity for the pack.
- Senior Assistant – Neil Barnes: Reunited with Rennie from their championship-winning days at the Chiefs.
- Head of Performance – Phil Healey: A trusted strength and conditioning expert who has followed Rennie across three different continents.
A Massive 2026 Test Schedule
Rennie’s “new-look” All Blacks will face a baptism of fire. After July home Tests against France, Italy, and Ireland, they will head into a historic four-Test series against the Springboks.
In a unique scheduling twist, three of those clashes will take place on South African soil, while the fourth fixture is set for a high-profile “away” encounter in Baltimore, USA. This series will serve as the ultimate litmus test for Rennie’s ability to “whip New Zealand into shape” following a dismal 2025 performance review.
