Who makes the cut? We rank the top two players in every Springbok forward position ahead of the 2026 July internationals.

As the July international window looms, the rugby world is waiting for Rassie Erasmus to unveil his first Test squad of 2026. With several stalwarts sidelined by injury and a new wave of talent forcing their way into the conversation, the pecking order within the world-champion pack is shifting.

Based on current form, availability, and the tactical requirements of the “Bomb Squad,” here is the definitive 1–2 ranking for every position in the Springbok engine room.

The Front Row: Power and Precision

PositionFirst ChoicePrimary Back-up
Loosehead PropOx NchéJan-Hendrik Wessels
HookerMalcolm MarxJohan Grobbelaar
Tighthead PropThomas du ToitWilco Louw
  • The Breakdown: With Frans Malherbe sidelined, Thomas du Toit—currently dominant for Bath—is the logical successor at No. 3. At hooker, while Malcolm Marx remains the global gold standard, the rise of Johan Grobbelaar suggests a changing of the guard, with Bongi Mbonambi potentially dropping down the order to accommodate Grobbelaar’s superior lineout accuracy and work rate.

The Engine Room: A Lock Crisis?

With Lood de Jager and RG Snyman facing long-term layoffs, the second row requires a blend of legendary grit and fresh blood.

  • No. 4 Lock: Eben Etzebeth (1) & JJ van der Mescht (2)Etzebeth remains the enforcer-in-chief, but the real talking point is the potential inclusion of JJ van der Mescht. Erasmus may look to the powerhouse newcomer to provide the physical bulk required in the absence of other veterans.
  • No. 5 Lock: Ruan Nortje (1) & Franco Mostert (2)This is Ruan Nortje’s moment to fully claim the No. 5 jersey. His reliability at the set-piece makes him the ideal partner for Etzebeth, with the “universal soldier” Franco Mostert providing his trademark utility cover across the second and back rows.

The Loose Trio: Leadership and Versatility

  • Openside Flank (No. 6): Siya Kolisi (1) & Kwagga Smith (2)The captain remains the heartbeat of the team. Behind him, Kwagga Smith continues to be the world’s most dangerous impact player, capable of turning a game in a 20-minute burst.
  • Blindside Flank (No. 7): Pieter-Steph du Toit (1) & Elrigh Louw (2)A fit PSDT is non-negotiable. However, Elrigh Louw has successfully navigated his return from injury and offers a near-identical physical profile for the Bomb Squad.
  • Eighthman (No. 8): Jasper Wiese (1) & Cameron Hanekom (2)Wiese is the undisputed physical anchor of the pack. The exciting development here is Cameron Hanekom; after a period of instability at No. 8, a fully fit Hanekom is the specialist the Boks must now back to secure the future of the position.
