Tony Brown is heading to the All Blacks in 2028, but the Springboks aren't stressing. Discover the 4 elite coaches ready to step into the attack coach role.

The rugby world was caught off guard on Sunday when New Zealand Rugby unexpectedly announced that current Springbok attack mastermind Tony Brown will head home to join the All Blacks in 2028.

Predictably, the timing of the announcement raised eyebrows. Kiwi legend Sir John Kirwan even joked that Brown would spend the next two years “stealing” the Springboks’ intellectual property for their arch-rivals.

But inside the South African camp, there is zero panic. If there is one thing Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus excels at, it’s flawless succession planning.

No State Secrets to Steal

Springbok legend Victor Matfield quickly dismissed any anxiety regarding “stolen intel,” pointing out that South Africa’s blueprint has never been a secret.

“I think everyone knows what the DNA of the Springboks is,” Matfield noted. “We want to dominate the set-piece, dominate territory, and the kicking game and aerial battle are hugely important to us. Then we’ve got X-factor players who can hurt you from anywhere.”

Brown’s job is simply to add flair to an already lethal foundational system. Furthermore, Brown himself released a statement via SA Rugby reaffirming his absolute loyalty to the green and gold through the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

The Elite Four: Who Could Replace Tony Brown?

With Brown’s departure locked in for 2028, SA Rugby has a massive two-year runway to identify a successor. Fortunately, the pipeline of elite South African coaching talent both locally and abroad is incredibly deep.

Here are the four heavyweight tactical brains likely on Rassie Erasmus’s radar:

1. Johan Ackermann

The current Bulls mastermind is having an imperious season, steering the Pretoria-based franchise straight into the United Rugby Championship (URC) final. Ackermann has a proven track record of unlocking devastating attacking rugby, having previously transformed the Lions into the most exciting, high-scoring side of the Super Rugby era.

2. Franco Smith

Currently working wonders in Scotland with the Glasgow Warriors, Smith is globally renowned for his attack-minded rugby philosophy. His intricate understanding of modern backline play makes him an seamless fit to continue evolving the Boks’ offensive shape.

3. Jacques Nienaber

Could the mastermind return? With rumors circulating that Nienaber is growing disillusioned with his stint at Irish powerhouse Leinster, the door could swing wide open for a historic homecoming to the national setup.

4. Johann van Graan

Van Graan has truly come of age as a head coach in the English Premiership, turning Bath into an absolute juggernaut. His tactical maturity makes him a prime candidate to be lured back into the Springbok structures after the 2027 global showpiece.
