The biggest stage in football didn’t shake him. When Bafana Bafana needed a spark to keep their World Cup dreams alive against a resolute Czech Republic side, Hugo Broos turned to his 21-year-old prodigy, Relebohile Mofokeng.
Affectionately dubbed “President yama 2K” by the fans, the Orlando Pirates playmaker injected instant energy, creativity, and composure into the South African attack, helping secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw. It was a massive bounce-back performance for Bafana Bafana following their opening 2-0 defeat to Mexico.
Speaking to SABC Sport after the final whistle, a grounded but beaming Mofokeng revealed the exact blueprint the veteran Belgian tactician gave him before he stepped onto the pitch.
Exploiting the Spaces
“The coach’s instructions were that I must play behind their defensive midfielders, because there was space there,” Mofokeng explained. “In the first half, I think the gents did very well to find the spaces, but we needed more threat. We did very well in the second half to attack them and apply pressure.”
Stepping onto a World Cup pitch for the first time can paralyze even veteran players. For Mofokeng, the weight of the moment wasn’t lost on him, but a heart-to-heart with Broos made all the difference.
The Ultimate Vote of Confidence
“Obviously, it is my first World Cup, my first game,” Mofokeng added. “So the coach just told me to be confident, to believe in myself. He told me that he believes in me, so I must believe in myself. The game was very difficult because this is the biggest stage. You just need confidence. The coach just said I must play, be myself, and just do my best.”
Mofokeng’s fearless cameo has completely shifted the narrative around Bafana’s tournament strategy. With a must-win, high-stakes clash against South Korea looming next, the dynamic attacker has made a undeniable case to be named in the starting eleven. If his debut is anything to go by, South Africa’s future is in incredibly safe hands.
