Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has officially weighed in on Relebohile Mofokeng’s blockbuster transfer from Orlando Pirates to Belgian Pro League outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
While the veteran Belgian tactician fully backs the 21-year-old virtuoso to take Europe by storm, he has issued a firm, realistic warning: the PSL wunderkind must undergo a massive physical transformation before expecting regular minutes in Brussels.
A Dream Move with a Warning Label
Mofokeng’s stock reached an all-time high during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured prominently in all three of South Africa’s matches. However, Broos—who knows the uncompromising nature of his home country’s top flight inside out—insists that raw talent alone will not cut it in Belgium.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Broos urged South African football fans to exercise extreme patience, revealing that the first half-year of Mofokeng’s European adventure will likely be spent in the gym rather than on the pitch.
“I think it’s a good thing for him, and he will progress, but we mustn’t expect that he will play from the first day… Rele must be stronger. It’s a very tough competition in Belgium, and in the first five to six months they will work a lot on his physical strength.” — Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos
The Blueprint for European Success
Despite the cautionary advice, Broos remains entirely confident that the Orlando Pirates academy graduate has the technical ceiling to reach the very top of world football, provided he embraces the grueling conditioning work ahead.
- The Verdict: “He’s a talented player, and once you have the power you need for such a competition, there will be no problem at all,” Broos added.
- The Stepping Stone: Belgium has historically served as the perfect launchpad for South Africa’s finest exports. If Mofokeng can adapt to the rigorous tactical and physical demands of Union SG, a move to one of Europe’s traditional “Big Five” leagues could quickly materialize.
