South African model, actress, and author Refilwe Modiselle is celebrating a monumental literary milestone as her groundbreaking children’s book, Zizi’s World: Through Her Vanilla Eyes, officially marks its first anniversary.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, Modiselle reflected on the emotional and impactful journey of the past year. She described the book not merely as a children’s story, but as an active movement centered on representation, inclusivity, and cementing a lasting legacy for future generations.
A Global First for Albinism Representation
At the heart of the beautifully crafted story is Zizi, a vibrant young girl living with albinism. Through Zizi’s eyes, the book tackles themes of courage, kindness, and self-love, encouraging children from all walks of life to celebrate their unique differences.
Modiselle expressed her profound gratitude for being able to introduce a first-of-its-kind educational perspective to children’s literature globally:
“Today last year would mark a milestone of the launch of the first book of its kind for children’s education in the world, because of the subject matter! It’s been an honour taking Zizi to the world… I didn’t know I would be planting an eternal seed for the trajectory of representation & inclusivity & an everlasting legacy in literature.”
Backed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation
The anniversary celebrations come on the heels of a massive co-sign. Modiselle revealed that just last week, her literary work received formal approval and recognition from the prestigious Nelson Mandela Foundation, a powerful validation of her quest to change lives through literature.
Looking forward, “Aunty Fifi” is determined to scale the movement by expanding her school reading tours across South Africa and eventually crossing international borders to bring Zizi’s pure message of love to the global stage.
