The acclaimed Odeion String Quartet—South Africa’s premier university-resident string ensemble—is taking to the stage at the historic Northwards House in Parktown on Sunday, 16 August 2026. Presented by the Mzansi Chamber Music Collective, the afternoon performance promises a rich exploration of chamber music spanning classical masterworks and contemporary South African compositions.
Perched on the Parktown ridge with expansive views across Johannesburg, Northwards House offers an intimate setting for chamber performance, blending early 20th-century Herbert Baker architecture with classical acoustics.
A Premier Programme: From Beethoven to World Premieres
The ensemble’s August concert features a balanced repertoire designed for classical enthusiasts and modern music advocates alike:
- Beethoven’s Razumovsky Quartet No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 59: A cornerstone of the string quartet repertoire, celebrated for its emotional depth, complex counterpoint, and dramatic intensity.
- Arthur Feder’s The Tides Of…: A contemporary chamber work exploring texture and dynamic soundscapes.
- Commissioned World Premiere by Motshane Pege: A newly commissioned piece by rising South African composer Motshane Pege, specially created for the Odeion String Quartet.
