South African football is set for a massive transition! ⚽ Veteran Belgian tactician Hugo Broos has officially declined an offer from the South African Football Association (SAFA) to extend his contract beyond July 31, 2026, marking the end of a transformative five-year spell at the helm of Bafana Bafana.
According to reports, the 74-year-old coach sent a heartfelt farewell message to his squad and backroom staff, expressing a desire to retire from full-time management to spend quality time with his family in Belgium.
The Architect of Bafana’s Modern Golden Era
Appointed in May 2021, Broos leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the most successful managers in SA Football history:
- 2023 AFCON Bronze: Led South Africa to a podium finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
- Historic World Cup Run: Guided Bafana Bafana back to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and secured an unprecedented berth in the knockout rounds.
- Youth Empowerment: Built a fierce, disciplined young core that elevated South Africa back into Africa’s elite tier.

Although SAFA sought to retain Broos through to the 2027 AFCON, the veteran strategist has reiterated his intent not to “die on the bench” after four decades of coaching.
