South Africa bids farewell to one of its most successful national team managers. The South African Football Association (SAFA) has officially confirmed that head coach Hugo Broos has stepped down following the expiration of his contract.
Speaking at a media briefing at SAFA House, SAFA President Dr. Danny Jordaan expressed gratitude to the 74-year-old Belgian manager, bringing an end to a stellar five-year tenure that restored Bafana Bafana’s standing on both continental and global stages.
The Legacy of Hugo Broos (2021–2026)
Broos took over the national team in May 2021 and spearheaded a total transformation of South African football:
- AFCON Heroics: Guided Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
- World Cup Milestone: Qualified Bafana Bafana for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and led them to a historic Round of 16 finish—their first-ever appearance in the knockout rounds.
- Youth Breakthroughs: Entrusted young domestic talent, developing international stars like Teboho Mokoena, Khuliso Mudau, and Ronwen Williams into elite performers.
- Overall Record: Managed 60 matches, recording 29 victories, 19 draws, and only 12 losses.
What’s Next for Broos & Bafana Bafana?
Having indicated his intention to retire from full-time management to spend time with his family in Belgium, Broos leaves the dugout on a high. However, SAFA has left the door open for him to remain involved in a consultative or technical advisory role.
With 2027 AFCON Qualifiers fast approaching, SAFA is reviewing over 80 coaching applications. Highly decorated tactical mind Pitso Mosimane is reportedly leading the race among the frontrunners to succeed Broos.
