From theatre stages to global screen dominance, Sdumo Mtshali’s star continues to rise.
The acclaimed South African actor has officially hit another major career milestone, gracing the front cover of GQ South Africa’s August 2026 print issue. To mark the occasion, Mtshali hosted an intimate launch event in Johannesburg at The Bioscope Independent Cinema, surrounded by family, close friends, and industry colleagues in partnership with Mazda SA.
From Class Act Winner to Global Netflix Sensation
Mtshali’s journey to the top began in 2010 when he won the inaugural season of Class Act. What followed was a prolific career with breakout television performances in Intersexions, establishing him as one of Mzansi’s most versatile acting talents.
“I didn’t go there to win. My goal was to take the South African audience back to the theatre,” Mtshali reflected.
Fast forward to today, Mtshali has achieved international acclaim for his compelling performance as the morally complex Jonasi Gomora in Netflix’s hit African original series, The Polygamist.
On Acting & Authenticity
Addressing the intense reaction viewers have had to his character in The Polygamist, Mtshali shared his artistic philosophy on portraying morally grey characters:
“I can’t judge a character. As an actor, you understand the morality of everything, but you have to put your own opinions aside and tell the story truthfully.”
Reflecting on his new GQ cover and the current chapter of his career, Mtshali added: “It feels brand new again. It feels affirming to know that I’m doing something special. I’ve always dreamed of this journey, and God is placing me exactly where I need to be.”
