Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala has officially rejoined senior first-team training at Naturena, putting an end to widespread transfer speculation following recent social media activity.

The 21-year-old sparked fan anxiety after removing photos of himself in Kaizer Chiefs kit from his Instagram page and temporarily unfollowing the club. However, his absence from the senior squad’s season opener against Kruger United was strictly related to his physical recovery from a broken arm suffered late last season.

The Road Back to Full Fitness

To regain match sharpness, the Chiefs technical team assigned Shabalala to gain competitive minutes with the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) reserve side:

  • Match Action: Started and completed 75 minutes during the DDC team’s 3–1 friendly win over Lifofane FC at Setsoto Stadium in Lesotho.
  • Coach’s Assessment: Reserve team head coach Vela Khumalo commended the midfielder’s professionalism, focus, and humility throughout the trip.
  • Senior Return: Having completed his rehabilitation protocol, Shabalala has returned to Johannesburg to compete for selection under head coach Fernando Da Cruz.

His return provides additional depth in attack ahead of Kaizer Chiefs’ upcoming MTN8 quarter-final clash against Golden Arrows on Sunday, 9 August 2026, at FNB Stadium (18:00 kick-off).
