South African musician Prince Kaybee has weighed in on a social media exchange surrounding the idea that one artist can “open doors” for everyone else in the music industry.
The discussion began after a fan responded to a post involving DJ and producer Maphorisa, who had credited Black Coffee with helping open doors for other artists.
The fan later clarified that the original comment was intended sarcastically, saying that Maphorisa’s remarks about Black Coffee had been interpreted as disrespectful.
Prince Kaybee responded by challenging the broader idea that one individual can be responsible for creating opportunities for everyone.
“It’s impossible for an individual to open doors for everyone,” Kaybee wrote, arguing that while Black Coffee may have made significant contributions, no single person can be expected to create opportunities or “save” everyone.
He encouraged people to take responsibility for their own careers rather than waiting for another person to provide opportunities.
“Black Coffee may have done good but he is not here to save everyone, its impossible,” Kaybee said.
Kaybee further urged his followers to remain independent and fearless, adding: “If you are waiting for him to open your door, you are fucked my friend, fend for self, STAY FEARLESS.”
The musician ended the post with a light-hearted warning: “and don’t send nudes,” accompanied by a smiling emoji.
The exchange has reignited discussion around the role established artists play in creating opportunities for emerging musicians, as well as the importance of individual initiative in the entertainment industry.
While influential figures can help create platforms and opportunities, Kaybee’s comments frame career development as something artists must ultimately take responsibility for themselves.
