Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou believes his side have developed into one of the most difficult teams to face after an outstanding start to the season.
The Buccaneers have gone unbeaten across their first 12 matches, collecting 10 victories and two draws as Ouaddou’s side continue to set the pace.
While his “point machine” comment has prompted plenty of attention, the Pirates coach did not specifically name a particular rival when reflecting on the teams that have traditionally dominated the league.
Ouaddou delighted with Pirates’ progress
Ouaddou credited his players for their performances since the beginning of pre-season, with the coach highlighting the work done from 24 June onwards.
The Moroccan believes the team’s preparation has played an important role in their strong start.
“I have to give them credit since the 24th of June in terms of how we played football.”
Pirates have combined attacking efficiency with defensive discipline, scoring regularly while limiting the number of goals conceded.
Ouaddou admitted there have been difficult moments, but believes his players have responded well to those challenges.
For him, the first cycle of the campaign has been defined by strength, commitment, organisation and discipline.
‘It’s very difficult to play against Pirates’
The Pirates coach is also encouraged by the mentality developing within his squad.
Ouaddou insists opponents are now finding it increasingly difficult to take points from the Buccaneers.
“It’s very difficult to play against Pirates.”
He then delivered the line that has sparked debate among South African football supporters.
“We can say that we have become a point machine.”
Ouaddou added that other teams had previously carried that reputation, but believes Pirates are now playing their part as defending champions.
He also stressed that the club intends to remain in that position and embrace the expectations that come with being champions.
Pirates setting a new standard?
Ouaddou’s early record has certainly made an impression.
The coach has recorded a win percentage of more than 70%, while Pirates remain unbeaten after 12 matches.
September was particularly impressive, with the Buccaneers enjoying a perfect month and strengthening their position near the top of the league standings.
The challenge now is maintaining that consistency over the rest of the campaign.
With Pirates producing results week after week, attention will turn to whether Ouaddou can sustain the momentum and guide the Buccaneers to another league title.
