The Stormers overcame a shaky start and a spirited Connacht fightback to launch their 2026/27 United Rugby Championship campaign with a 29-15 bonus-point victory in Galway on Friday night.
John Dobson’s side looked in control during the opening stages, but a combination of missed opportunities, handling errors and ill-discipline allowed Connacht to turn the game around before half-time.
The Stormers eventually regained their composure after the break, with their forwards taking control of the contest and powering the South African side to a hard-earned victory.
Stormers squander early chances
The visitors made an impressive start and quickly established themselves in Connacht territory.
The Stormers dominated possession and created several opportunities through strong carries and line breaks, but their inability to finish those chances kept the hosts within touching distance.
They raced into a 10-0 lead and appeared set to take control of the match.
Instead, Connacht capitalised on a spell of poor Stormers discipline and game management.
Mack Hansen and Josh Ioane provided the spark for the Irish side as two late first-half tries completely changed the complexion of the match.
Connacht headed into the interval 12-10 ahead, leaving the Stormers to reflect on a first half in which they had created enough opportunities to be comfortably in front.
Connacht stretch Stormers
The Stormers continued to struggle with their execution after the restart.
They immediately pushed forward but again failed to turn pressure into points, with Seabelo Senatla held up over the line before Jurie Matthee missed a penalty opportunity from a favourable position.
Connacht were more clinical when their chances arrived.
Sam Gilbert added a penalty to extend the hosts’ advantage to 15-10, putting further pressure on the Stormers to find a response.
That response eventually came through the forwards.
A powerful Stormers driving maul forced Connacht into conceding a penalty and receiving a yellow card, although the visitors were unable to capitalise immediately after losing possession at the resulting lineout.
The missed opportunity summed up a frustrating night for the Stormers, who repeatedly threatened without always converting their pressure into points.
Stormers finish with a flourish
The momentum finally swung decisively in favour of the visitors as their pack began to dominate.
The Stormers increased the intensity of their carries and began to win the physical battle, with Connacht struggling to contain the South African forwards.
Replacement prop Sazi Sandi crashed over from close range to level the scores, with Matthee adding the conversion to put the Stormers back in front at 17-15.
With 10 minutes remaining, the match remained firmly in the balance.
The Stormers, however, finished strongly.
They tightened up defensively before turning their pressure into two late tries, denying Connacht any opportunity to mount a final comeback and securing the bonus point in the process.
Warrick Gelant, Sandi, Vernon Paulo and Ezekiel Ngobeni crossed for the Stormers, while Matthee and Yaqeen Ahmed contributed with the boot.
A winning start, but plenty to improve
The result gives the Stormers the maximum points from their opening URC fixture, but the performance also highlighted several areas Dobson’s team will need to address.
Their attacking pressure was often undermined by poor finishing, while discipline and decision-making allowed Connacht to remain in a contest the Stormers had initially threatened to dominate.
The late surge, however, demonstrated the physical strength and depth available to the Cape side.
For a team beginning another demanding URC campaign, the most important objective was achieved: the Stormers leave Galway with a bonus-point victory and plenty of momentum to build on.
