Former Kaizer Chiefs transfer target Elias Mokwana is officially a free agent after parting ways with Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
The Bafana Bafana winger has terminated his contract with the club by mutual agreement, bringing his spell in Tunisia to an immediate end. According to reports, the decision is understood to be linked to a registration issue at Espérance.
Mokwana joined Espérance in August 2024 after impressing during his time with Sekhukhune United. Before that, he developed his game at Platinum City Rovers, earning his breakthrough move to Sekhukhune in 2022.
His time in Tunisia proved highly successful. Mokwana became the first South African player to win the Tunisian Ligue 1 title, while also adding the Tunisian Cup and Tunisian Super Cup to his honours.
He further gained valuable experience in the CAF Champions League before spending the 2025/26 season on loan at Saudi Pro League side Al Hazem.
At international level, Mokwana remains an important option for Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos. His pace, direct running, dribbling and ability to threaten defenders have made him a useful attacking weapon for the national team.
Now, with the 26-year-old available following his departure from Espérance, attention will turn to his next destination.
Could Kaizer Chiefs Return for Mokwana?
Kaizer Chiefs were previously interested in signing Mokwana before he moved to Tunisia. His availability could therefore reignite speculation about a possible return to the Premier Soccer League.
Chiefs have been active in the transfer market, and a player with Mokwana’s international experience and familiarity with South African football could be an attractive option.
However, the Amakhosi are unlikely to be the only club monitoring his situation. His experience in Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and with Bafana Bafana could make him a sought-after player on the market.
For now, Mokwana’s next move remains unclear — but his departure from Espérance has certainly opened the door to an intriguing new chapter in his career.
