Former Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Queiroz suffers back-to-back defeats as Ghana surrender a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to Gambia in AFCON qualifying.

Carlos Queiroz’s start as Ghana head coach has taken another difficult turn after the Black Stars surrendered a two-goal lead before suffering a 4-2 defeat to Gambia in their latest 2027 AFCON qualifier.

The result at the Accra Sports Stadium means Ghana have now lost both of their opening Group C matches.

The Black Stars had already gone down 2-0 to Ivory Coast last Thursday, leaving Queiroz facing another setback just days later.

Ghana let two-goal lead slip

Ghana looked firmly in control after taking a commanding early lead.

Ernest Nuamah converted from the penalty spot in the 27th minute before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled Ghana’s advantage six minutes later.

But Gambia responded before the interval and completely changed the momentum of the match.

Mohamed Badamosi pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 37th minute, while Omar Colley equalised just five minutes later.

Ghana went into the break having seen a comfortable 2-0 advantage disappear.

Gambia complete stunning comeback

The Black Stars were unable to restore their authority after half-time.

Gambia continued to threaten and eventually completed the turnaround when Ebrima Colley put the visitors ahead in the 68th minute.

Colley then struck again in stoppage time to seal a remarkable 4-2 victory for Gambia.

For Ghana, what initially appeared to be a comfortable evening quickly became another frustrating night in their AFCON qualifying campaign.

Ghana face uphill battle in Group C

The back-to-back defeats leave Ghana on zero points after two matches, placing them at the bottom of Group C on the information provided.

Somalia are also without a point but sit above Ghana on goal difference.

The results represent a challenging opening to Queiroz’s tenure.

The former Bafana Bafana coach was brought in to help Ghana improve their fortunes, but consecutive defeats have given the Black Stars plenty to address before their next qualifier.

Ghana will have an opportunity to respond when they face Somalia on 11 November.

For Queiroz and his players, the focus now turns to stopping the slide and getting their AFCON qualification campaign back on track.
