Orlando Pirates could get a timely squad boost ahead of the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 October 2026. It will be the first meeting between the sides this season.
A Title-Race Subplot
In the Betway Premiership, Sundowns lead the table by a single point over the champions, though Pirates have a game in hand. The winner of Saturday’s final is likely to gain a psychological edge in that race.
Mbatha and Makgopa Close to Returning
Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa have been out injured for about two months and are in contention to return. Their lack of match fitness makes a starting spot unlikely in a game of this size, but both could feature from the bench.
Mbatha’s return would be especially welcome. He was a key midfield figure last season, when Pirates were unbeaten in the matches he started. He also missed the 2-1 loss to Sundowns earlier this year.
Sibisi a Doubt
At the back, captain Nkosinathi Sibisi is a concern. The 31-year-old is with Bafana Bafana but has been unable to play because of a knock. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will be hoping he recovers in time to return to club duty fully fit.
History and R10 Million at Stake
With R10 million on offer, Pirates will be chasing a record fifth consecutive MTN8 title.
