Lyle Foster faces an uncertain Bafana Bafana future after moving to Houston Dynamo, with Oswin Appollis emerging as strong competition for a place.

Lyle Foster finds himself at a career crossroads, with the former Orlando Pirates striker currently outside the Bafana Bafana picture and no clear route back into Pitso Mosimane’s plans.

The 26-year-old forward has experienced plenty of change over the past year. After Burnley’s relegation from the English Premier League, Foster left the club on loan and made the move to MLS side Houston Dynamo.

His latest switch adds another chapter to a career that has already taken him from South Africa to Monaco, Belgium, Portugal and England.

But while Foster has gained valuable experience abroad, his position in the national team appears less secure than it once was.

Foster’s Bafana place is no longer guaranteed

Foster was an important member of the Bafana squad during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, contributing two goals and two assists as South Africa reached the semi-finals.

He also featured for 56 minutes in the World Cup opener against Mexico this year.

However, his involvement dropped significantly thereafter. Foster remained an unused substitute against Czechia, South Korea and Canada, raising questions about where he currently stands in Mosimane’s thinking.

With another Bafana squad expected in November, Foster will be hoping his performances in the United States can put him back into contention.

The challenge is that the competition for attacking places is becoming increasingly fierce.

Appollis is putting pressure on the established names

One player making a strong case for regular Bafana involvement is Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis.

The 25-year-old has reportedly attracted attention from French Ligue 1 club Strasbourg, following previous speculation linking him with Portuguese giants Porto.

Appollis has also been in impressive form for South Africa. His three-assist performance in the 5-0 victory over Eritrea underlined his attacking influence, while he previously produced another three-assist display against Congo in 2024.

At club level, Appollis has registered two goals and two assists in seven Betway Premiership appearances this season.

His rise means Foster cannot afford to stand still if he wants to reclaim his place in the national setup.

What comes next for Lyle Foster?

Foster still has the pedigree and international experience to play a major role for Bafana, but his next chapter will depend heavily on consistency and form at Houston Dynamo.

For Mosimane, the decision may ultimately come down to who offers the best balance of form, confidence and attacking threat.

With players such as Appollis pushing their way into the spotlight, Foster’s reputation alone may no longer be enough.

The upcoming Bafana selection could therefore provide a significant indication of whether Foster remains part of Mosimane’s long-term plans — or whether the striker faces an even longer wait for his international comeback.

Do you think Lyle Foster deserves another chance with Bafana Bafana?
