With the winter transfer window approaching, the halls of Naturena are buzzing with talk of a defensive overhaul. After a season of both brilliance and inconsistency, Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. may be looking to make a “big splash” to turn Kaizer Chiefs back into perennial title contenders.
The Defensive Surgery
The biggest question mark remains the backline. Chiefs have been heavily linked with 25-year-old, Portugal-based defender Mhleli Mabuza. If the deal goes through, Mabuza is expected to be a plug-and-play starter.
Tactically, coach Khalil Ben Youssef might consider moving Rushwin Dortley to a full-back role. This “inverted full-back” tweak would allow Dortley to tuck into midfield during possession, making the side more compact and harder to hit on the counter—provided he returns to full fitness for the new campaign.
Academy Excellence: The Youth Revolution
While the defense might see new faces, the attack is firmly rooted in the “Village.” The proposed XI features a front four dominated by academy graduates: Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala, and the exciting Mfundo Vilakazi.
These youngsters have already proven their worth, with Duba and Shabalala both finding the net in the recent 4-1 demolition of Magesi.
The Spearhead: Lilepo or Silva?
Up front, Congolese attacker Glody Lilepo has emerged as a reliable focal point. Though originally signed as a winger, his return of four goals and three assists suggests he can lead the line effectively.
However, the “Super Sub” shadow of Flavio Silva looms large. With seven goals in just 16 appearances, Silva has become the ultimate insurance policy, allowing the younger stars to play with freedom knowing a clinical finisher is waiting on the bench.
