Our mission is to ensure that all students, particularly those with disabilities, can fully participate in teaching, learning, and research. We remove barriers to knowledge, support, and resources, regardless of physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges.
1. In-Person Services: A Welcoming Physical Space
Students visiting the library in person can utilize tailored services designed for comfort, safety, and ease of use.
- Designated Technology-Enhanced Spaces: Specialized areas equipped with assistive devices for magnification, audio assistance, or specialized typing.
- Accessible Accompaniment: Companions assisting clients with disabilities enter free of charge.
- Service Animals: Guide dogs are welcome inside library premises.
- Mobility Support: Wheelchairs are available upon request for ease of movement.
- Communication Support: Sign language interpreters can be arranged for deaf or hard-of-hearing students.
2. On-Site Assistive Technology
The Muckleneuk Library (Research Commons, Level 4) offers a comprehensive collection of assistive technologies designed to level the academic playing field.
- Wide-Screen Computer Monitors: Enhanced display areas for users requiring high magnification.
- Zoom-Text Large-Print Keyboards: High-contrast keys to assist users with visual impairments or dyslexia.
- Prodigi and Merlin Desktop Readers: Advanced video magnifiers that enlarge printed text, adjust contrast, and convert print to speech.
3. Loanable Reading and Audio Devices
For flexible, mobile study, the Unisa Library offers portable devices that can be borrowed for home use.
- Blaze EZ: A multi-function audio player supporting DAISY books, MP3s, and voice recordings. Ideal for auditory learners.
- Victor Reader Stratus: A user-friendly audiobook player with large tactile buttons for easy chapter navigation.
- Booksense: A lightweight, pocket-sized player perfect for mobility between study environments.
- Classmate Reader: Provides highlighted reading, note recording, and dictionary support for students with dyslexia or ADHD.
- Dolphin Pen: A USB device containing screen-reading and magnification software that instantly transforms any computer into an accessible workstation.
4. Conversion Services for Print Disabilities
We convert library-owned content (excluding prescribed textbooks) into accessible formats suited to your needs:
- PDF (Searchable/Magnifiable)
- Microsoft Word (Editable/Screen reader compatible)
- HTML (For text-to-speech and braille displays)
- PNG (Image format for diagrams)
- MP3 (Audio format)
Converted materials can be delivered via email, CD/DVD, courier, or pre-loaded onto loanable audiobook readers.
5. Digital Resources and Accessibility Tools
Unisa’s e-books, e-journals, and databases are designed for remote study. Key benefits include:
- Text-to-speech compatibility.
- Adjustable font sizes and customizable color contrast settings.
6. Training, Empowerment, and Free Tools
We offer free training programs to build digital literacy and research confidence. Sign language interpreters can be arranged for these sessions.
Furthermore, we support free accessibility software for personal devices:
- NVDA: Free screen reader software.
- Desktop Zoom: Magnification tools.
- Dyslexia-Friendly Typefaces: Fonts designed to improve readability.
