Kaizer Chiefs head into their next league fixture with a few fitness question marks and some interesting talking points from both the present squad and the past.
Baartman Picks Up a Knock on U23 Duty
Luke Baartman is now a serious doubt for Chiefs’ next Betway Premiership match. The 20-year-old attacker hurt his thigh while playing for South Africa’s U23 side in their 1-1 draw with Algeria. That is a blow for Amakhosi, as the versatile youngster has featured in all seven of their league games this season.
The timing is awkward, with Stellenbosch up next. The Cape Winelands side have beaten Chiefs in each of their last three meetings, and the two teams meet again on Tuesday, 13 October at 19:30.
Maboe’s Absence Raises Questions
Lebohang Maboe has been one of Chiefs’ best performers this term, with two goals and two assists in the league. That form earned the 32-year-old playmaker a Bafana Bafana call-up for the games against Eritrea and Guinea.
His international plans fell apart when he suffered a thigh problem during Chiefs’ goalless draw with Golden Arrows before the break. He also missed a penalty in that match, so it was a night to forget. How long he will be sidelined remains unclear.
Young Talent Waiting in the Wings
There is some good news on the youth front. Defender Kabelo Linda Nkgwesa, nicknamed “Festival”, has been a fan favourite on social media, though injuries have kept him out for much of the season. A return could be close.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old midfielder Steven Mendes is reportedly close to a senior call-up after impressing in training.
A Former Striker Looks Back
Ex-Chiefs forward Xolani “Touch” Mabaso, now 40, has opened up about his time at Naturena. He admits he grew too comfortable among the club’s star names, assuming success would come simply from being part of the group. He believes a lack of maturity held him back. Mabaso has been without a club since leaving Mbombela United in 2018.
