Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly secured the services of Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.
According to football news outlet Unplayable, the 27-year-old winger has agreed to join Amakhosi after becoming a free agent following his departure from Tunisian club Espérance de Tunis in September.
Mokwana has earned 11 caps for South Africa, scoring twice, and could add pace, creativity and attacking depth to the Chiefs squad.
Chiefs reportedly complete Mokwana deal
Unplayable announced on X that Chiefs had reached an agreement with the winger, claiming the transfer was completed and that the club would confirm the signing during the week.
Mokwana is recognised for his speed, close control and ability to take on defenders, particularly when operating on the right wing. Those qualities could make him an exciting addition at Naturena.
His journey to professional football was not straightforward. Financial challenges forced him to abandon his sports science studies, but he remained determined to pursue a career in the game.
He began attracting attention in the ABC Motsepe League with Gemsbok Classic before moving to National First Division outfit Platinum City Rovers.
During the 2021/22 campaign, he made 22 appearances and scored three goals, performances that helped him earn a move to the top flight.
From Sekhukhune United to Bafana Bafana
Mokwana joined Sekhukhune United in May 2022 on a three-year contract and quickly established himself as an important member of the team.
His performances in the Betway Premiership brought regular game time, goals, assists and individual recognition. He made more than 50 league appearances for the club over two seasons.
The winger’s progress also earned him a place in the national team. He received his first Bafana Bafana call-up in November 2023 and was part of the South African squad that finished third at the Africa Cup of Nations.
He subsequently scored in international matches against Andorra and Congo, further strengthening his reputation on the international stage.
Mokwana’s experience abroad
In August 2024, Mokwana moved to Tunisia after signing a three-year deal with Espérance de Tunis.
The move marked another major step in his career. He featured in more than 30 matches across competitions during his first season and was part of the team that won the Tunisian league title, Tunisian Cup and Tunisian Super Cup.
He later joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem on a season-long loan in August 2025.
Mokwana made 24 appearances, including 16 starts, and scored a memorable individual goal against Al-Taawoun.
Now reportedly available after leaving Espérance, the winger could be heading back to South Africa for a new challenge with Kaizer Chiefs.
For Amakhosi, his arrival would represent a significant addition of international experience and attacking quality. However, supporters will have to wait for confirmation from the club before treating the transfer as official.
