Deon Hotto’s rise to becoming an Orlando Pirates veteran and Namibia international is a story of resilience, sacrifice and determination.
Long before he became a household name in South African football, Hotto faced difficult circumstances growing up in Swakopmund, Namibia. His former mentor, Elton Katangolo, says football became the youngster’s best opportunity to build a different life.
“Football was the only ticket out of the township for him.”
Katangolo revealed that Hotto lost his mother at a young age and had to learn to cope with life’s challenges while pursuing his football dreams.
Football became Hotto’s way out
Hotto began his career with Blue Boys FC before progressing to African Stars in Namibia.
His pace, versatility and attacking ability eventually attracted attention from South African clubs, leading to his move to the PSL in 2014.
He joined Golden Arrows before later playing for Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits, where he established himself as one of the league’s dangerous wide players.
His performances eventually earned him a move to Orlando Pirates in 2020.
From police custody to professional football
Hotto’s journey was not without extraordinary setbacks.
Katangolo recalled an incident in which the young footballer spent time in police custody shortly before an important match. Remarkably, he was released in time to represent his team the following day.
Rather than allowing difficult circumstances to derail his ambitions, Hotto continued pushing forward.
At Pirates, he developed into a highly versatile player capable of operating as a winger, wing-back and defender.
A decorated career with Orlando Pirates
Hotto reached another major milestone during the 2025/26 season, helping Orlando Pirates secure the Betway Premiership title.
The Buccaneers also completed a domestic treble after adding the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup to their trophy haul.
His club success has been matched by an impressive international career with Namibia.
Hotto made his Brave Warriors debut in 2013 and played a starring role in Namibia’s 2015 COSAFA Cup triumph, scoring twice in the final.
He also produced a memorable moment at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring Namibia’s winning goal against Tunisia.
From losing his mother at a young age and facing difficult circumstances to becoming an Orlando Pirates star and Namibia international, Hotto’s story is ultimately one of perseverance and determination.
