Mamelodi Sundowns have a major opportunity to change the early Betway Premiership picture when they take on Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night.
Sundowns head into the rearranged fixture knowing that three points would move them onto seven points, putting them level with early leaders Orlando Pirates and second-placed Kaizer Chiefs.
Masandawana have collected four points from their opening two matches. They began the campaign with an entertaining 3-2 victory over TS Galaxy before playing out a 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs.
Sundowns can join Pirates and Chiefs at the top
A victory would immediately put Sundowns among the early title contenders.
Orlando Pirates currently sit top with seven points and a +5 goal difference, while Sundowns have four points and a +1 goal difference.
That means Miguel Cardoso’s side need a convincing victory if they want to finish the night at the summit. A four-goal win would take Sundowns to a +5 goal difference, matching Pirates, while their superior goals scored could then see them move into first place.
Even if they don’t overhaul the Buccaneers, three points would put Sundowns level with both Pirates and Chiefs and send an early warning to their title rivals.
Gallants looking for a response
Marumo Gallants have had a difficult opening to the new campaign.
Bahlabane Ba Ntwa have managed just one point from two matches, following a goalless draw against Kruger United with a 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC.
They now face a daunting trip to Loftus, where Sundowns will be expected to control possession and create the majority of the chances.
The return of Cassius Mailula could also give Cardoso another attacking option as Sundowns look to turn their early-season promise into another important victory.
A huge night for the title race
