Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen is facing growing scrutiny after a series of costly mistakes, with club legend Brian Baloyi calling for stronger competition for the goalkeeper’s position.
Petersen enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign and was even nominated for the Goalkeeper of the Season award. However, his performances at the start of the new season have raised concerns.
His latest setback came during Chiefs’ 2-2 draw against Richards Bay, when an attempt to play out from the back resulted in an early goal for Nqaba Xulu.
Baloyi: Petersen looks too comfortable
Baloyi, who enjoyed a distinguished career with both Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana, believes Petersen needs to rediscover the urgency and concentration that made him one of the league’s standout goalkeepers last season.
The former Bafana goalkeeper also questioned Petersen’s demeanour and suggested that the Chiefs captain may have become too comfortable in his position.
“He looks too relaxed to me.”
According to Baloyi, goalkeepers must remain alert, communicate effectively with their defenders and avoid unnecessary mistakes, particularly during the early stages of the campaign.
The Chiefs legend believes Petersen should also feel genuine pressure from the other goalkeepers competing for the No. 1 jersey.
Leaner and Bvuma waiting for their chance
Petersen’s position is no longer guaranteed, with Renaldo Leaner and Bruce Bvuma both available to challenge for the starting spot.
Leaner’s arrival has increased competition within the goalkeeping department, while Bvuma has previous experience at Chiefs and knows what it takes to compete for the jersey.
The question now is whether head coach Fernando Da Cruz believes Petersen should retain his place or whether one of his rivals deserves an opportunity.
Should Chiefs drop their captain?
There is no question that Petersen has the experience and quality to bounce back. His performances last season demonstrated exactly what he is capable of.
But football is also about current form.
If mistakes continue to cost Chiefs points, Da Cruz may eventually have to consider a change — even if that means leaving the club captain on the bench.
Giving Leaner or Bvuma a chance would not necessarily mean Petersen has lost his long-term position. It could simply provide additional competition and give the captain an opportunity to rebuild his confidence.
