Kaizer Chiefs are once again facing uncertainty between the posts, with Renaldo Leaner now presented with an opportunity to stake his claim after Brandon Petersen’s injury.
For more than six years, Amakhosi have struggled to establish lasting stability in the goalkeeping department. Since Itumeleng Khune’s decline and eventual departure, the club has rotated through several options without finding a goalkeeper who has consistently held the No.1 jersey for the long term.
Daniel Akpeyi was among the early contenders after Khune’s influence began to fade, while Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen also received opportunities. However, inconsistent performances and costly mistakes repeatedly resulted in changes.
The arrival of Fiacre Ntwari in 2024 appeared to provide another possible solution. The Rwanda international was given a run in the team but lasted only seven matches as first choice before mistakes saw him lose his place.
Bvuma was subsequently given another opportunity before Petersen returned to the starting lineup.
Petersen looked like the long-term answer
Petersen eventually appeared to break the cycle. His performance in the 2025 Nedbank Cup final helped strengthen his position, and he was later handed the captaincy.
His performances during the 2025/26 campaign further established him as an important figure for Chiefs. He was nominated for Goalkeeper of the Season and was also considered in the wider conversation around Bafana Bafana’s World Cup squad.
However, the current campaign has brought renewed questions.
Petersen has already been responsible for four errors leading directly to goals and is now sidelined through injury, forcing Chiefs to turn to Leaner.
Can Leaner finally bring stability?
Leaner now has an opportunity to change the conversation.
Rather than simply being viewed as an emergency replacement, the goalkeeper could use Petersen’s absence to build confidence and potentially make a stronger case for regular first-team football.
For Chiefs, the situation also presents another test of their long-term goalkeeping strategy.
The club have had experienced goalkeepers, promising youngsters and international options, but consistency has remained difficult to achieve. Frequent changes between the posts have also coincided with defensive reshuffles, making it harder to establish the understanding and continuity that can develop between a goalkeeper and his backline.
Petersen appeared to have ended that cycle last season. His injury has now reopened the debate.
With Leaner stepping in, all eyes will be on whether he can take advantage of the opportunity and give Kaizer Chiefs the stability they have been searching for.
