Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya is already attracting major praise in Scotland, with one Rangers analyst predicting the young centre-back could eventually command a transfer fee of more than R650 million.
Olwethu Makhanya’s impressive start to life at Rangers has sparked early speculation about just how valuable the Bafana Bafana defender could become.
The 22-year-old centre-back joined the Scottish giants from Philadelphia Union and has quickly made an impression after establishing himself in manager Derek McInnes’ defence.
His performances have also earned praise from Rangers Review journalist Derek Clark, who believes Makhanya has the qualities required to become one of the club’s biggest future sales.
Speaking to Kick Off, Clark suggested that Makhanya could eventually attract a transfer fee of more than £30 million, which is approximately R650 million.

Clark believes Makhanya’s age, athleticism and ability to play as a modern centre-back could make him an attractive target for clubs across Europe if his development continues.
“I think he would be a record sale if he does leave. His attributes are what you look for in a modern centre-back,” Clark said.
The journalist also pointed to Calvin Bassey’s move from Rangers to Ajax as a benchmark. Bassey reportedly left the Scottish club for around £22 million, and Clark believes Makhanya could eventually surpass that figure.
“He looks like he’s got the whole package. He is very athletic and very young still, still developing, so I think he would be an attractive option for many clubs,” Clark added.
Clark believes a fee of £30 million-plus could be possible if Makhanya maintains his current trajectory.
For now, however, the South African defender remains focused on establishing himself at Rangers. His performances have also strengthened his credentials at international level.
Makhanya played the full 90 minutes as Bafana Bafana began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Guinea.
The defender was also included in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he did not feature during the tournament.
With his Rangers career still in its early stages, Makhanya has plenty of room to develop. If his strong start continues, the Bafana star could become an increasingly valuable asset for the Scottish club.

Makhanya’s rise also adds another layer to the competition for places in the Bafana Bafana defence. His continued development at Rangers could put further pressure on established options, including Teboho Lebo Mokoena, depending on how coach Pitso Mosimane shapes his squad.
