Kaizer Chiefs legend Neil Tovey believes Fernando Da Cruz deserves more time to establish himself at Amakhosi and has urged supporters to remain patient with the French coach.
Da Cruz arrived at Chiefs in July and has overseen an unbeaten start to his Betway Premiership campaign. After seven league matches, Amakhosi find themselves fourth on the table, although a number of draws have prevented them from making a stronger early push.
Tovey, a former Chiefs captain, believes it is far too early to judge Da Cruz and says the coach should be given an opportunity to improve the team’s results as the season progresses.
“Give him a little bit more time. It’s only the start of the season, so a little bit of patience and let them see the next couple of games,” Tovey told FARPost.
The Chiefs legend pointed to the team’s four league draws as an area that needs attention. He believes turning even two of those stalemates into victories would have significantly improved the club’s position.
Tovey wants Chiefs to turn draws into wins
According to Tovey, Chiefs have not made a disastrous start, but they need to become more consistent if they are serious about challenging Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
“The league form hasn’t been that bad; it’s just those four draws,” he explained.
Tovey feels the next phase of the campaign will be particularly important, especially after the international break. Chiefs will need to return strongly and build momentum if they want to close the gap on the leading teams.
Chiefs have a chance to make up ground
With Sundowns and Pirates also involved in the MTN8 final, Tovey believes Chiefs have an opportunity to focus on collecting valuable league points.
He has encouraged Da Cruz and his players to use the upcoming fixtures to improve their league position rather than allowing early dropped points to define their season.
For now, Tovey’s message to the Chiefs faithful is clear: patience could be crucial as Da Cruz attempts to build his team and turn their promising unbeaten run into more victories.
Where will Kaizer Chiefs finish this season?
Chiefs will need to convert their draws into wins if they are to keep pace with the likes of Sundowns and Pirates.
Can Fernando Da Cruz lead Amakhosi into the title race, or will their inconsistent results cost them later in the season?
