The Stormers are once again the vanguard of South African rugby in the United Rugby Championship (URC), and head coach John Dobson believes one of his powerhouse forwards is ready to trade the blue and white of the Cape for the Green and Gold of the Springboks.
Ntuthuko Mchunu, the 27-year-old loosehead prop, has become the talk of the town after a string of explosive performances. While his primary duties involve anchoring the scrum, Mchunu has turned into a surprising scoring machine, crossing the whitewash four times in his last three matches.
A Star Reborn in the Cape
Mchunu, who originally earned three Test caps in 2022, was early on labeled as the spiritual successor to the legendary Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira. After a period of development following his move from the Sharks, Mchunu appears to have reached his peak maturity under Dobson’s guidance.
- The Coach’s Verdict: “He’s going to be pushing for much higher honours,” Dobson stated. “His general game, especially his ball-carrying, is outstanding. I think he’s going to be a star for South African rugby for some time to come.”
- The Global Threat: Dobson also hinted that international clubs are circling the prop, noting the challenge of “warding off” overseas interest to keep him in the local system.
The Player’s Perspective
For Mchunu, the move to Cape Town provided the “tough love” required to elevate his game to the international standard.
“The coaches were hard on me from the get-go… demanding a standard. That’s been the challenge, and it hasn’t dropped,” Mchunu explained.
By sharpening his ball-carrying—long considered his “edge”—Mchunu has transformed from a traditional prop into a dynamic modern forward capable of changing a game’s momentum.
Springbok Outlook: The 2026 Test Window
With the Springbok coaching staff looking for depth in the front row, Mchunu’s timing couldn’t be better. His blend of raw power and newfound tactical discipline makes him a prime candidate for a recall as South Africa prepares for a grueling international season.
