Arthur Zwane’s AmaZulu have collected more PSL points than Kaizer Chiefs since October 2024, but the coach is still searching for a win over the big three.

Arthur Zwane has quietly built an impressive record at AmaZulu, with the Durban club collecting more league points than Kaizer Chiefs since the former Amakhosi coach took charge.

AmaZulu have established themselves as regular contenders for a top-six finish under Zwane, and they currently sit in the PSL’s top three after overtaking Chiefs.

However, while the numbers show that Zwane has helped Usuthu close the gap on South Africa’s biggest clubs, there is one glaring weakness in his record.

Zwane’s impressive AmaZulu record

Zwane took charge of AmaZulu in October 2024 and has overseen a period of consistent league performances.

Under his leadership, Usuthu finished sixth in the 2024/25 season before improving to fourth in 2025/26. They have now made another strong start to the 2026/27 campaign.

According to statistics shared by OptaJabu, AmaZulu collected 101 points from 63 matches during Zwane’s tenure.

That is more than Kaizer Chiefs managed across the same number of games, with Amakhosi collecting 94 points.

The gap becomes even more significant when the other PSL heavyweights are considered.

Mamelodi Sundowns collected 155 points from 64 matches, while Orlando Pirates accumulated 140 points from 62 games during the period analysed.

The figures underline Zwane’s ability to consistently collect points with AmaZulu, despite operating with fewer resources than the traditional PSL giants.

The big three problem

There is, however, a significant blemish on Zwane’s record.

AmaZulu have failed to beat any of the PSL’s traditional big three — Sundowns, Pirates or Chiefs — in domestic competition since Zwane took charge.

The best results have come against Pirates and Chiefs, with Usuthu managing draws against both sides.

Sundowns have proved the biggest stumbling block, winning each of their recent meetings with AmaZulu.

That includes a heavy 5-2 defeat at Loftus Versfeld earlier this season.

Chiefs clash could be another test

Zwane will have another opportunity to change that narrative when AmaZulu travel to face Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on 4 November.

The fixture could provide another important test of whether Usuthu are ready to compete consistently with the PSL’s biggest clubs.

The statistics suggest Zwane has already helped AmaZulu close the gap in terms of overall league points.

But if Usuthu are to take the next step under their coach, victories against Sundowns, Pirates and Chiefs could be crucial.

For now, Zwane’s record remains a fascinating contrast: impressive consistency against the league as a whole, but no wins against the PSL’s big three.

Can Arthur Zwane finally lead AmaZulu to a win over one of the PSL giants?
