For many young South African footballers, pulling on the famous gold and black of Kaizer Chiefs is the ultimate childhood ambition. Former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Keletso Makgalwa was no different, holding onto a lifelong dream of representing Amakhosi. However, when the opportunity finally knocked, the 29-year-shipper attacker made the bold, difficult choice to turn it down—opting instead for a high-profile move to Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
Weighing Big Offers and New Horizons
Before finalizing his move to East Africa in July following two stellar campaigns with Sekhukhune United, Makgalwa found himself sitting on lucrative proposals. Alongside Simba SC, both Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu tabled attractive offers for his signature.
Choosing between a lifelong dream in domestic football and a fresh international chapter was far from straightforward. Seeking clarity, Makgalwa turned to trusted peers who had experienced life outside South Africa, consulting former teammates Neo and Rushine. While they offered a frank assessment—noting that local pitches and environments in Tanzania present unique challenges—the advice reinforced his belief that a new frontier could unlock both personal and professional growth.
The Financial and Career Appeal of Simba SC
Ultimately, the decision boiled down to two critical factors: financial security for his family and the lure of continental football.
“I felt like I needed a new start in another country and to see how it goes. I think I’ve made the right decision to join Simba, and also, it’s for my family, you know, financially, to help my family,” Makgalwa shared with iDiski Times.
Beyond the financial uplift, the chance to test himself on the premier continental stage proved decisive. By joining Simba SC, Makgalwa secured regular competition in the prestigious CAF Champions League, stepping into an ambitious ecosystem designed to challenge him on a broader African scale.
Though leaving a childhood dream on the table was tough—especially after a rewarding chapter with Mamelodi Sundowns that eventually overshadowed his early allegiances—Makgalwa remains confident he charted the right course for his career.
