Okmalumkoolkat is shining a spotlight on producer and engineer Khanzi Mnguni, whose behind-the-scenes contribution helped shape the sound of the rapper’s latest album, iTheku eThekwini.
Okmalumkoolkat has taken a moment to acknowledge one of the key creatives who helped bring his latest musical offering to life.
The Durban-born rapper recently shared a throwback photo from an early studio session with Khanzi Mnguni, reflecting on their creative journey and publicly expressing his appreciation for the producer and engineer.
In his message, Okmalumkoolkat revealed that Mnguni produced the beat for “uZongithanda uNomphelo”, while also playing an important role in engineering several recording sessions for the album.
“This is one of the first sessions we shayad with @khanzimnguni_ who produced the beat for Uzongithanda Unomphelo…”
The rapper went on to thank Mnguni for his contribution, describing him as an important part of the creative process behind the project.
Khanzi Mnguni’s Role Behind the Album
Mnguni’s contribution extends beyond a single production credit.
He produced the beat for “uZongithanda uNomphelo,” which appears as the seventh track on iTheku eThekwini’s 11-song tracklist. He also handled engineering duties across a number of recording sessions, contributing to the overall sonic direction of the project.
His involvement highlights the collaborative work that often takes place away from the spotlight when an album is being created.
While artists are naturally at the centre of attention, producers, engineers and other studio creatives play an equally important role in transforming ideas into finished records.
iTheku eThekwini Draws From Durban
Released on 22 October 2026 through Sjambok Studios, iTheku eThekwini continues Okmalumkoolkat’s long-standing connection to Durban and its culture.
The project draws from his roots while continuing the experimental and culturally rich approach that has become a defining part of his catalogue.
The album follows projects including Mlazi Milano and uShukela eTiyeni, further establishing the rapper’s distinctive artistic identity.
An Album Years in the Making
iTheku eThekwini is the result of years of creative development.
Okmalumkoolkat has previously spoken about wanting to capture the information, experiences and changing realities that shaped the period between 2020 and 2025.
The finished project therefore represents more than a collection of songs. It reflects a period of artistic evolution, personal observation and collaboration.
By revisiting one of the earliest sessions with Mnguni, Okmalumkoolkat has offered fans a glimpse into the process behind the album while recognising the people who contributed to its creation.
The shout-out is also a reminder that some of the most important contributions to a music project happen behind the microphone and outside the spotlight.
