A-Reece has joked about making album-quality music and releasing it as mixtapes, reigniting the debate around his acclaimed project TTTM.

A-Reece has once again sparked conversation about the way he labels his music, jokingly admitting that he has a habit of creating projects with album-level quality before releasing them as mixtapes.

The Pretoria rapper made the tongue-in-cheek confession on social media while reacting to a discussion about some of the greatest mixtapes in hip-hop history.

A-Reece: ‘Something’s wrong with me’

A-Reece kept his response brief but managed to reignite a familiar debate among his fans.

Responding to the conversation, the rapper wrote: “Man, I just love making album-quality material and calling it a mixtape. Something’s wrong with me fr.”

While clearly delivered with humour, the comment reflects how listeners have viewed some of A-Reece’s projects over the years.

Among the releases most often mentioned in that conversation is his acclaimed 2021 project, Today’s Tragedy, Tomorrow’s Memory (TTTM).

Why fans consider TTTM an album

Released on 26 March 2021, Today’s Tragedy, Tomorrow’s Memory quickly established itself as one of the standout projects in modern South African hip-hop.

The 13-track release explored themes including grief, memory and legacy, while featuring artists such as Stogie T, Wordz, Ayanda Jiya, Jay Jody and Belo Salo.

The project also earned A-Reece the Mixtape of the Year award at the 2021 South African Hip Hop Awards.

Despite officially being classified as a mixtape, the project’s cohesive sound, detailed production and personal subject matter led many fans to treat it like a full studio album.

Its streaming performance has further strengthened that reputation, with TTTM surpassing 21 million Spotify streams, while most of its tracks have crossed the million-stream mark.

A-Reece’s mixtape debate continues

The rapper’s latest comment once again brought that conversation to the surface.

Some fans have long argued that TTTM deserves to be viewed as an album rather than simply a mixtape, particularly because of its structure, themes and overall attention to detail.

That perception has become part of A-Reece’s wider artistic identity. His projects are often built around introspection and storytelling, with the Pretoria artist generally allowing the music itself to take centre stage rather than relying heavily on flashy promotion.

For A-Reece, the distinction may simply come down to how he chooses to package his work. For his listeners, however, the quality often makes the label feel almost irrelevant.

And judging by his latest admission, the rapper appears to be perfectly aware of the irony.
