Springboks star Cheslin Kolbe has offered fans an encouraging update on his recovery, revealing that he is halfway towards being able to enjoy one of his favourite foods again.
The experienced winger suffered a fractured jaw during South Africa’s Test against New Zealand at FNB Stadium in September and was forced off the field just minutes into the match.
A month later, Kolbe has revealed that his recovery is progressing, although he still has some way to go before he can return to normal eating and rugby activities.
Kolbe: ‘I can finally chew a steak’
Kolbe shared the latest news with his followers on Instagram on Tuesday, 6 October, thanking supporters who have continued to check on his wellbeing.
The Springbok joked about his recovery by revealing that he is now halfway towards being able to chew a steak again.
“Half way there before I can finally chew a steak,” Kolbe said, while expressing his appreciation for the messages of support.
The 32-year-old also made it clear that he is eager to get back onto the rugby field.
“Cannot wait to be back on the field again! 1 month in. God is in control,” he added.
How Kolbe suffered the injury
Kolbe sustained the jaw injury on 5 September during South Africa’s Test against New Zealand at FNB Stadium in Soweto.
The winger took a heavy blow while making a defensive tackle inside the Springboks’ 22-metre area during the opening stages of the match.
He was unable to continue and left the field after only nine minutes.
Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed after the match that Kolbe had suffered a broken jaw, ruling him out of the remainder of the Test.
The injury was another frustrating setback for a player who has dealt with several physical challenges throughout his career.
Kolbe determined to return
Despite the latest setback, Kolbe’s latest message suggests that his recovery is moving in the right direction.
The veteran winger has previously battled a number of injuries, including foot, rib, ankle, hamstring, knee and thumb problems during his club and international career.
His latest update will therefore come as welcome news to Springbok supporters, who will be eager to see one of South Africa’s most dangerous attacking players back on the field.
For now, Kolbe remains focused on completing his recovery — and, judging by his latest update, getting back to eating a proper steak is one milestone he is particularly looking forward to.
