Kaizer Chiefs have officially strengthened their attacking department with the signing of Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana, who makes his return to South African football after spending two seasons abroad.
The 27-year-old winger has joined the Soweto giants as a free agent following his departure from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hazem. His arrival at Naturena represents another important addition as Amakhosi continue working towards building a competitive squad.
Chiefs confirmed the signing through an official announcement, welcoming the KwaMhlanga-born attacker back to the Betway Premiership.
Elias Mokwana’s Journey From Sekhukhune United to Kaizer Chiefs
Mokwana’s journey to the top of South African football has been characterised by determination and hard work.
Despite experiencing financial difficulties that forced him to abandon his sports science studies, the winger remained committed to pursuing his professional football career.
He initially developed his talent in the ABC Motsepe League with Gemsbok Classic before earning an opportunity with National First Division outfit Platinum City Rovers.
His impressive performances eventually attracted interest from top-flight clubs. During the 2021/22 campaign, he made 22 appearances and scored three goals, performances that helped him secure a move to Sekhukhune United.
In May 2022, Mokwana signed a three-year contract with Babina Noko, where he quickly established himself as an important attacking player. He went on to make more than 50 league appearances over two productive seasons.
His consistent performances also earned him international recognition, receiving his first Bafana Bafana call-up in November 2023.
Mokwana was subsequently part of the South African national team that secured a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Mokwana’s European and Middle Eastern Adventure
In August 2024, the talented winger secured a move to Tunisian powerhouse Espérance Sportive de Tunis, signing a three-year contract.
His time in Tunisia proved successful, as he helped the club capture the league title, Tunisian Cup and Tunisian Super Cup.
He later moved to Saudi Arabia, joining Al-Hazem on a season-long loan in August 2025.
During his spell in the Saudi Pro League, Mokwana made 24 appearances, including 16 starts, and found the back of the net against Al-Taawoun.
Now, following his departure from Al-Hazem, the Bafana Bafana international is returning to South Africa to begin a new chapter with Kaizer Chiefs.
What Elias Mokwana Brings to Kaizer Chiefs
Mokwana’s arrival provides Amakhosi with additional attacking options, particularly in the wide areas.
His pace, experience and ability to take on defenders could prove valuable as Chiefs look to improve their attacking performances and compete for silverware.
Having experienced football in South Africa, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, the winger returns with valuable international and club experience.
Chiefs supporters will now be hoping that Mokwana can translate that experience into consistent performances at Naturena and become an important figure in the club’s ambitions.
