Tanzanian giants Young Africans appoint former Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids as head coach to lead their league and CAF Champions League campaigns.

Tanzanian football giants Young Africans SC have appointed South African tactician Fadlu Davids as their new head coach, marking his return to the East African football scene.

The 45-year-old takes charge after previously coaching Young Africans’ bitter rivals Simba SC in Dar es Salaam, where he made a strong impression by guiding the club to the CAF Confederation Cup final.

Davids replaces compatriot Manqoba Mngqithi, who recently departed following a short spell in charge of the Tanzanian champions.

The appointment gives Davids another opportunity to establish himself in African football, having previously worked with clubs such as Orlando Pirates, Maritzburg United and Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca.

Davids faces immediate title challenge at Young Africans

The former Orlando Pirates co-coach inherits a team chasing domestic success and looking to close the gap on their biggest rivals.

Young Africans are currently second in the Tanzanian Premier League, five points behind league leaders Simba SC, who are coached by fellow South African Steve Barker.

Davids will be expected to reduce that deficit while maintaining Yanga’s position among Tanzania’s leading clubs.

His immediate responsibilities will also include preparing the squad for the CAF Champions League group stage, where the club will be targeting a strong continental campaign.

The South African coach has arrived in Tanzania with members of his trusted technical team, including assistants Darian Wilken and Mueez Kajee.

Young Africans welcome their new South African coach

Young Africans confirmed Davids’ appointment through an announcement on their social media platforms, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the club into a successful new chapter.

The club described itself as one of Tanzania’s most decorated football institutions and welcomed the coach as it looks to maintain its domestic dominance and compete for continental honours.

Davids also expressed excitement about returning to Tanzania, describing the country as a second home.

He indicated that the opportunity had come at the right time after previous approaches from the club’s leadership.

A familiar return to Tanzanian football

Davids is no stranger to the demands of coaching in Tanzania. His previous experience with Simba SC gave him valuable insight into the country’s football environment and the intense rivalry between its biggest clubs.

Now, he faces the challenge of leading Young Africans against the same team he previously coached.

With Simba currently holding a five-point advantage in the league, Davids will need to make an immediate impact if Yanga are to strengthen their title challenge.

His next assignment is scheduled to be an away league fixture against Polisi Tanzania FC on Friday, 20 November.

The appointment adds another South African coach to the growing list of local tacticians making their mark across African football. Davids will be hoping to turn Young Africans’ ambitions into trophies both at home and on the continental stage.
