Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa faces an uncertain future as the club prepares to sign Stellenbosch FC attacker Andre de Jong. Mabasa’s struggle for playing time has been highlighted despite his strong scoring record this season (four goals in nine appearances across all competitions).

Coach Ouaddou on Mabasa’s Role
Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou addressed Mabasa’s recent lack of minutes, explaining that the tactical demands of the team’s current system are the reason he has favored Evidence Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma upfront.
While acknowledging Mabasa’s finishing ability, Ouaddou stressed the need for high pressing:
“Mabasa knows that he’s one of the best players who is capable of finishing in the box… Now we’re pressing very high and chasing, I cannot afford to leave the opponents with the ball for more than five seconds, it’s too much. It’s an area that he knows he needs to do more. We expect a bit more from him in terms of pressing.”

Mabasa’s Record vs. De Jong’s Arrival
Mabasa is currently just shy of becoming Orlando Pirates’ all-time leading goalscorer in the PSL era, having scored 50 goals for the club. However, he did not feature in the last few matches of the year, signaling his current standing under the coach.
The potential arrival of Andre de Jong further complicates Mabasa’s position. De Jong is described as a versatile forward who can play a holding role or as a number 10, providing a different tactical option compared to Mabasa’s profile.
- Transfer Update: A source told Soccer Laduma that De Jong is close to sealing the deal, confirming he was leaving Stellenbosch because the Pirates offer was “quite tempting.” He is expected to finalize his switch this week.
AFCON Opportunity?
Despite the competition, Mabasa might see increased playing time in January due to Evidence Makgopa’s participation in the upcoming AFCON tournament, especially if the Bafana Bafana squad progresses deep into the competition.
