The pressure is mounting on Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos ahead of Sunday’s critical AFCON Round of 16 clash against Cameroon. Former Kaizer Chiefs star and outspoken pundit Junior Khanye has suggested that a defeat could signal the end of the Belgian tactician’s tenure.
Despite finishing second in Group B with six points, South Africa’s journey has been far from smooth. Lacklustre performances against Zimbabwe and Angola—relying on late-match heroics—combined with a scoreless draw against ten-man Egypt, have left fans and experts questioning the team’s tactical direction.

Junior Khanye Criticizes Squad Selection
Khanye, speaking on the Smash Sports podcast, didn’t hold back on Broos’ controversial selection choices, questioning the exclusion of seasoned and in-form local talent:
- The Defensive Dilemma: Khanye questioned why Grant Kekana, a standout in the CAF Champions League, was sidelined in favor of Siyabonga Ngezana, whom he claims is having a “terrible tournament.”
- The Offensive Gap: The absence of Thembinkosi Lorch and Iqraam Rayners—players with proven track records against international opposition—remains a major point of contention.
Success vs. Current Struggle
Broos has a decorated recent history with Bafana, having secured a third-place finish in 2024 and qualifying for both AFCON 2025 and the 2026 World Cup. However, the current lack of execution and defensive fragility have overshadowed these achievements.
While SAFA is unlikely to fire Broos with only six months left on his contract, the “backlash” from a potential exit to Cameroon might be the tipping point that leads the coach to resign voluntarily before his final scheduled tournament.
