Orlando Pirates have officially lost rising star Mbekezeli Mbokazi (20) to the US Major League Soccer (MLS), after the central defender signed a long-term deal with Chicago Fire.
The signing marks a swift conclusion to Mbokazi’s impactful, yet brief, career in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL).

A Rapid Rise
The left-footed defender, affectionately known as “TLB,” leaves Pirates after playing just 38 professional matches.
- Debut: He made his professional debut in March 2025 under then-coach Jose Riveiro.
- Achievements: In his short tenure, he captained the South Africa U20 side to the COSAFA Championship, helped Pirates finish second in the PSL, and reached the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
- International Career: He debuted for Bafana Bafana at age 19 and has already earned five caps, with a recent standout performance against Nigeria. He was nominated for the CAF Young Player of the Year award in October.
🇺🇸 Joining the South African Contingent in MLS
Mbokazi becomes the third South African to currently ply his trade in the MLS, joining two other high-profile players:
- Olwethu Makhanya (21, Left-footed Central Defender) at Philadelphia Union.
- Bongokuhle Hlongwane (25, Forward) at Minnesota United.
Mbokazi’s move follows the path of legendary South African icons who previously played in the US, including Patrick Ntsoelengoe, Jomo Sono, Kaizer Motaung, and Doctor Khumalo
