JOHANNESBURG — Following the record-breaking departure of defensive pillar Mbekezeli Mbokazi to MLS side Chicago Fire, Orlando Pirates have reportedly identified their primary target to restore balance to their backline: Marumo Gallants’ standout defender, Mpho Chabatsane.
The 23-year-old left-footer has emerged as the top candidate to fill the void left by Mbokazi, as Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou looks to maintain his tactical “game model” which prioritizes a left-footed specialist in the heart of defense.
The Mission: Restoring Defensive Balance
With Mbokazi gone, the Buccaneers’ current central defensive options—including Lebone Seema, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Olisa Ndah, Thabiso Sesane, and Tapelo Xoki—are all naturally right-footed. Coach Ouaddou has been vocal about the tactical necessity of a left-sided center-back for build-up play and defensive symmetry.
“I like my game model to have a left-footer on the left side for the balance of the team. It is up to me to find the solution to replace him [Mbokazi],” Ouaddou told the media following the Carling Knockout final in December.

The Ga-Matlala-born defender has been a revelation for Marumo Gallants this season. Having previously worked under Ouaddou during the coach’s stint at Gallants, the familiarity between the two is a major factor in the pursuit.
