Stellenbosch University (SU) has cemented its reputation as a premier research-intensive institution on the continent, securing the top spot for research productivity in the 2026 QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa.
The rankings, released on February 12, 2026, highlight SU’s unparalleled contribution to academic knowledge production across Africa.
Unmatched Research Volume
Data extracted from the Scopus database reveals that SU academics are the most prolific on the continent. Between 2019 and 2023, the university produced a staggering 17,000 peer-reviewed papers—averaging nearly 283 publications every month.
These outputs are particularly concentrated in key high-impact subject areas:
- Life Sciences and Medicine
- Engineering and Technology
- Social Sciences and Management
Academic Excellence and Regional Standing
Beyond research volume, SU boasts one of the highest concentrations of highly qualified academic staff. The university ranked second in South Africa (and third on the continent) for the number of academic staff holding PhDs.
Additionally, SU secured third place in both academic reputation and web impact, reinforcing its standing as a trusted brand and a leader in digital dissemination of knowledge.
Overall Regional Positioning
In the overall ranking, which evaluated 69 institutions across Sub-Saharan Africa, Stellenbosch University clinched the fourth position.
It is noteworthy that SU achieved these results without actively participating in the QS ranking process or providing direct data, relying instead on high-quality external data sources and its established global reputation.
