In a rare moment of Soweto solidarity, Orlando Pirates icon Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has called upon Kaizer Chiefs to do the unthinkable: derail Mamelodi Sundowns’ path to a ninth consecutive league title.
With the Brazilians holding a five-point lead at the summit, Vilakazi believes the competitive future of the Betway Premiership depends on the outcome of Wednesday’s clash at Loftus Versfeld.
The Fear of Total Dominance
Speaking via iDiski TV, Vilakazi expressed deep concern over the widening gap between the Tshwane giants and the rest of the league. He noted that the current Sundowns squad, with an average age of roughly 28, is perfectly positioned to dominate South African football for at least another half-decade.
“Realistically, Sundowns are going to run away with the league. But my wish is for someone to stop them. I hope Chiefs can do that because if Sundowns win their ninth league title, I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Vilakazi argued that an Amakhosi victory wouldn’t just benefit his former club, Orlando Pirates—it would reset the league’s momentum, giving every team a “fair chance” to fight for the title next season.
The Pirates Equation
For the legend’s wish to matter, the Buccaneers have their own work to do. The formula for a late title twist is clear:
- Pirates must defeat Stellenbosch FC tonight to keep the pressure mounting.
- Chiefs must take points off Sundowns on Wednesday to prevent the leaders from moving out of reach.
Should Sundowns overcome Chiefs, they would likely only need four more points from their remaining fixtures to mathematically eliminate Pirates from the race.
