The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Debating Union has firmly etched its name into the global elite of competitive speech. Following a whirlwind year of international travel, the team has returned from the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) in Bulgaria with a historic achievement: becoming the only African team to reach the knockout “outround” stage in the 2026 tournament.
The WUDC, widely considered the “Olympics of Debating,” saw UCT compete against the finest minds from every continent between 28 December 2025 and 4 January 2026.
Breaking the Glass Ceiling
Reaching the outrounds at WUDC is a feat reserved for the top tier of international universities. After nine grueling preliminary rounds covering topics from Artificial Intelligence and economics to global politics, UCT’s debaters secured their spot among the world’s best.
Menzimuhle Ncube, chairperson of the union and a third-year mechatronics engineering student, led the charge. Ncube’s performance was particularly notable, as he was officially ranked the highest-ranked African debater in the world.
“Making outrounds was an enormous achievement because we were up against the best debaters in the world,” Ncube reflected. “It taught us so much and proved that our hard work is paying off on the biggest stage possible.”

A Growing Legacy of Excellence
The union’s success in Bulgaria is no fluke. Under the current leadership, UCT has transformed from a quiet club into a continental powerhouse. Their recent trophy cabinet includes standout performances at:
- The Pan-African Universities Debating Championship
- The African National Debating League
- The South Atlantic Debating Championship

The world is taking notice. UCT is now frequently invited to coach other clubs and participate in exclusive, invitational-only events. The team is currently preparing for the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Round Robin in the United States this April—an elite tournament that hosts only a small, internationally diverse group of the world’s highest-level debaters.
