South Africa’s higher education sector is holding its own against heavy global competition. US News has officially dropped its highly anticipated 2026/27 Best Global Universities ranking, evaluating over 2,250 premier institutions worldwide on rigorous academic research and international citation data.

While the total number of South African institutions making the cut remains steady at 15, the real success story lies in their trajectory: nine local universities climbed significantly higher in the global standings, proving that Mzansi’s research output is carrying heavier weight on the international stage.

The Top Tier: UCT and Wits Retain the Crown

Once again, the University of Cape Town (UCT) remains the undisputed powerhouse of African academia. It stands proud as the only South African university to crack the elite global top 150, climbing slightly to rank 122nd overall.

Hot on its heels is the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), which safely solidified its spot in the global top 250 by locking in the 240th position.

THE TOP 5 HIGHER ED LEAGUE TABLE (2026/27)

2. University of the Witwatersrand (Global: 240th) — Top 250 Anchor

5. University of Pretoria (Global: 417th) — Climbed above UKZN

Major Shake-Ups in the Local Grid

The 2026/27 leaderboard reveals a few dramatic shifts in internal rivalries:

  • The Top 300 Club Expand: Both the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Stellenbosch University have officially broken into the world’s top 300, ranking 281st and 299th respectively. UJ successfully defended its third-place domestic rank after sensationally overtaking Maties back in 2025.
  • UP Edges Out UKZN: The University of Pretoria (Tuks) executed a major tactical climb, ascending to 417th globally and leapfrogging the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) to claim the 5th highest spot in the country.
  • Medical Sciences on the Rise: Lower down the tier, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU)—which only made its debut on the global list last year—continued its aggressive upward climb, rising to 1721st and surpassing the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

Behind the Formula: How They are Judged

The US News matrix heavily penalizes institutions that rely strictly on size, focusing instead on global research reputation and the raw citation impact of published academic work.

The three heaviest pillars driving this year’s scores include Global Research Reputation (12.5%), Regional Research Reputation (12.5%), and the Number of Publications within the top 10% of most-cited papers globally (12.5%). High-level international collaboration accounts for a critical 5% chunk of the total score.
