Dr. Nandipha Magudumana has received the news that her mother passed away in Port Shepstone. As she seeks psychological support, her family is fighting for her right to say a final goodbye.

Disgraced celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana is grappling with grief behind bars following the death of her mother, Nokuzola Sekeleni. Mrs. Sekeleni passed away on Thursday, March 26, at the family home in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal.

Currently held at the Bizzah Makhate Correctional Centre, Magudumana was notified of the loss by prison officials and social workers. Her family reports that the news has left her “shaken” as she attempts to process the bereavement from within her cell.

The Family’s Plea for Funeral Attendance

Magudumana’s brother, Nkosinathi Sekeleni, confirmed that the family is in the process of applying for her temporary release to attend the funeral service.

“She is trying to come to terms with the loss of our mother, and we are hoping that she will be strong even though it is painful. We hope that everything we request could be granted,” Sekeleni stated.

Her father, Zolile Sekeleni, who is also a co-accused in the Thabo Bester escape case, expressed his deep heartbreak over his wife’s passing during such a tumultuous time for the family.

Legal and Correctional Hurdles

Magudumana’s legal representative, Machini Motloung, has requested immediate psychological support for his client. Meanwhile, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has outlined the strict protocols regarding “compassionate leave.”

According to DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, Section 44(1)(a) of the Correctional Services Act allows for temporary release under specific conditions. However, the decision rests on several high-stakes factors:

  • Security Classification: Magudumana’s risk level as a high-profile inmate.
  • Behavioral Record: Her conduct during her period of incarceration.
  • Public Safety: The balance between humane treatment and the risk of flight.

The Road Ahead

This personal tragedy unfolds as Magudumana prepares for her upcoming trial alongside convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester. She faces a litany of serious charges, including:

  • Fraud and Corruption
  • Money Laundering
  • Arson
  • Aiding and abetting a prison escape

The court will now have to weigh these severe allegations against the family’s request for a final goodbye.
