Orlando Pirates have officially entered negotiations with fan-favourite defender Thabiso Lebitso to extend his stay at the club. With his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, the Buccaneers are moving swiftly to avoid losing the right-back on a free transfer.
Since joining from Chippa United in January 2024, the former TUT star has carved out a special place in the hearts of the “Ghost” supporters—most notably for his spectacular strike against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in March 2024.
Strategic Roster Planning
Despite a promising start, Lebitso’s journey has been challenged by injury setbacks and a crowded defensive lineup. However, Pirates’ management reportedly views him as a vital component of their long-term vision. The urgency of these talks is underscored by several key factors:
- Expiring Terms: As he enters the final months of his contract, Lebitso is technically eligible to begin discussions with other suitors.
- Squad Transitions: With veteran Bandile Shandu expected to depart, securing Lebitso ensures depth and continuity in the wing-back positions.
- Internal Competition: While the arrival of Deano van Rooyen and the presence of Kamogelo Sebelebele have intensified the fight for the starting XI, Lebitso’s versatility remains a high-value asset for coach José Riveiro.
The Season in Numbers
So far this season, Lebitso has made 14 appearances across a variety of high-stakes competitions, including the CAF Champions League, MTN8, and Carling Knockout.
The coming weeks will be decisive as both parties look to finalize terms. For the Pirates faithful, the hope is that one of the club’s most energetic performers will remain a Buccaneer for the foreseeable future.
