Orlando Pirates legend and former captain Lucky Lekgwathi believes the “boring” era of Mamelodi Sundowns’ unchallenged dominance is finally over. Following a dramatic shift in the Betway Premiership standings this week, Lekgwathi is backing the Buccaneers to take the title race all the way to the final whistle.
The race for the crown has been set ablaze after Pirates secured a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch FC, while Kaizer Chiefs held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw.
The Standings: A Two-Horse Race
The gap at the top has narrowed to a razor-thin margin, creating the most exciting season finale in nearly a decade:
- Mamelodi Sundowns: 65 points (28 matches played)
- Orlando Pirates: 62 points (27 matches played)
- The Scenario: If Pirates win their game in hand, the two giants will be deadlocked on points heading into the final stretch.
The “Helicopter” Finale
Lekgwathi, who famously led the Sea Robbers during their “Double Treble” era, expressed his excitement at the return of a competitive league.
“Winning a league with five to seven games to go is boring,” Lekgwathi stated. “I think it’s going to go to the wire. I even suggested that the PSL might need a helicopter on the final day to decide where the trophy will finally be delivered.”
Why Pirates Can Win It All
The former defender pointed to several key factors that make this Pirates squad a different beast compared to previous years:
- Squad Depth: Lekgwathi praised the club’s leadership—specifically Mpumi and Nkosana Khoza—for assembling a team that doesn’t rely on individuals. “Pirates is not a one-man team,” he noted.
- Rising Stars: He singled out youngster Yanela Mbuthuma for his work rate and heart, dismissing critics of the forward’s recent performances.
- Consistency: Lekgwathi is confident in the team’s current trajectory. “I don’t see Orlando Pirates losing any of the remaining games when I analyse them. It’s in their hands.”
A Sleepless Night in Soweto?
Lekgwathi concluded with a heartfelt nod to the fans, imagining the scenes if the trophy returns to Orlando for the first time since 2012. “Yho, I’m telling you, I don’t think we’ll sleep that night if they win the league.”
